Stating that work on the meat complex building is in the last stage of completion, Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Kabir Shirgaokar has said the meat market is expected to be completed in January.

The MMC had decided to demolish the old meat market building and build a new one in 2016. After sending notices to shop owners to vacate the shops, the MMC demolished the meat complex in May 2017 and provided temporary stalls to the shop owners.

The MMC has approved Rs 90 lakh for the meat complex which will contain 14 shops.

After approvals from the North Goa Planning and Development Authority, Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza and Aldona MLA Glenn Ticlo had laid the foundation stone for the new complex in the presence of then MMC chairperson Ryan Braganza and other MMC councillors in August 2019.

There was a 5-month delay in moving electricity poles from the site and construction finally began after MMC paid fees to the electricity department.

The work further got delayed due to lack of funds during the lockdown and it was later decided to use funds from the 14th Finance Commission.
