Margao beggars, migrants may face heat again

Margao beggars, migrants may face heat again

MARGAO
With the municipal and police authorities bracing up for another round of exercise to enforce Covid safety norms, migrants, including the beggars squatting and resting on the Margao municipal garden benches may face the heat yet again.

At the height of the pandemic last year and against the backdrop of the death of a couple of beggars, who later tested positive for Covid, the municipal authorities have decided to clear the migrants from the garden benches.

Following feedback received from citizens and given that the MMC garden footpath is being used by thousands of visitors and shoppers to the city, the municipality has decided to write to the Margao police to initiate necessary action against all those sitting and sleeping on the MMC garden benches in view of the rising Covid situation.

A couple of months ago, the Margao police had drafted a lone home guard personnel to ensure that no one sits or sleeps on the garden benches after the arrest of a person in a vehicle burning incident revealed that the accused was a frequent visitor on the MMC garden benches.
