The threat held out by Margao Municipal Council to city’s eateries and hotels to connect their establishments to the underground sewerage network or face disconnection of water and power supply may be a step in the right direction.
The PWD, sewage, however, is facing a problem of sorts from the eateries and hotels, especially from establishments located in the heart of the commercial capital. That the newly-laid sewerage network in the heart of the town, along the Comunidade-Municipal square, was choked with hotel waste, indicates that all appears not well with the waste discharged from the hotel.
In fact, after the PWD workers lifted tonnes of waste from a manhole opposite the Comunidade building a week ago, it reflected the grim reality that waste from the hotels is flowing into the underground line for want of grease guards.
In fact, a PWD official maintained that notices will be issued to all the city eateries and hotels in the heart of the town to install grease guards at their premises to ensure that waste, flour and oil does not flow down into the underground line and block the chambers. “It’s not even six months since the underground line was commissioned, but the sewage chambers are repeatedly getting blocked because of the flour and oil released in the line by the hotels,” informed a PWD engineer.
While disclosing plans to issue notices to the hotels in the city with a plea to install grease guards at the premises of the hotels, the official warned that further action will be initiated against the erring establishments as per the law.
