MMC scouts for open space to dispose debris from wards

In an interesting development, the Margao Municipal Council is scouting for open space in all the 25 wards to dispose off the debris generated in the wards.

What has forced the civic body to look out for space in the wards is the decision of the High Powered Coordination Committee’s decision to bar the entry of debris on the Sonsodo dump, which has been capped with mud.

While the civic body is on the job to clean up the drains at many places, the debris and mud have remained on the roads for want of a site for its disposal. In fact, motorists came across a mound of debris along the Hospicio-Holy Spirit Church square, hampering the smooth flow of traffic on Wednesday.

Information gathering from the civic body only revealed that the debris could not be lifted away since the two days for want of space.

Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Babita Prabhudedsai conceded that the civic body is facing the problem of lifting away the debris cleared from the storm-water drains. “The HPCC headed by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has barred the civic body from dumping any more waste or debris on Sonsodo after its capping last week post-fire incident,” Babita said.

Left with few options, the MMC Chairperson has asked the city fathers to scout for space in their respective wards for disposal of

the debris.

“Even if the city fathers manage to identify small tracts of land in their respective wards, it will go a long way in disposing of the debris generated from the cleaning of the drains,” Babita said.
