MARGAO
Firemen were literally kept on their toes on Wednesday as the Margao fire brigade received a total of 14 calls of uprooting of trees across Salcete due to the strong cyclonic winds.
While a couple of trees are believed to have come crashing down on residential houses, many others landed on the roads. Till late Wednesday evening, the firemen were on the field attending to the last three calls. The personnel informed they received calls had from Balli, Cuncolim, Chinchinim, Benaulim, Pajifond and Aquem. Fire Officer Gill de Souza said the strong winds that hit the state in the last two days were the cause behind the uprooting of trees. He pointed out that uprooting of trees is not something unusual at the beginning of the monsoon. The fire brigade had attended to five calls of tree uprooting across Salcete.
