It was yet another traffic jam at Cortalim leaving motorists angry, and this time accidents were not to be blamed for the queues.
Water logging at Agassaim side on Wednesday evenings left several motorists fuming as vehicles were held up for hours along the Cortalim road and teams from Goa police and Traffic police struggled to manage and regulate the huge queues of vehicles.
Motorists claimed that the water logging at Agassaim had forced several vehicles to drive slowly, thus causing long queues. To make matters worse, many taxis and two-wheelers began jumping the queues and created bottlenecks at the junctions.
Chaos prevailed at the Cortalim Circle as traffic movement slowed down and sporadic showers further hindered the movement as vehicles began lining up from all ends, including a small bypass road moving towards Loutolim and an internal road leading to Pilar.
According to sources, a one kilometre route near the Agassaim bypass junction took as long as an hour.
When contacted, sources at Agassaim police station confirmed that the traffic jam was caused due to water logging on the road.
“There was no accident reported but sudden rains caused water-logging in the area as gutters began choking with the mud. We, however, managed the situation by evening after we requested the bridge constructing company DBL to put their machinery to use.”
“Also, vehicles move slowly due to the potholes and this leads to queue of vehicles,” said the source.
According to sources in the Vasco traffic police, a request has already been made to the PWD to get the stretch of road near the Agassaim police station and the junction of the internal road to Pilar hot-mixed.
Sources said that contractors have also been requested to take up works on the gutter and clear the roadside mud that usually flows into the gutters, which leads to water-logging in the area.
