Margao municipal markets set to reopen today

Margao municipal markets, including the New Market and the Gandhi Market will reopen from Monday with the district Collector permitting shops selling essential items including stationary and rain protection but with certain restrictions.

Margao Municipal Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said the New Market and the Gandhi Market will be opened for the shops and establishments listed by the district Collector from Monday. “I have sent a copy of the order issued by the district Collector to the presidents of market associations. I have made it clear that the traders should ensure compliance with Covid safety norms, including social distancing in the markets”, the Chief Officer said.

In the order, South Goa district Collector Ruchika Katyal has for the first time allowed opening of shops in markets in the municipal and panchayat areas for sale of groceries/eatables, stationery, animal fodder, public distribution system and other such outlets, standalone liquor shops (for take away only).

These shops are to remain open from 7 am to 3 pm (home delivery of all these items, except liquor, will be allowed anytime).

The Collector’s order further allows shops/stores related to house/building repairs, monsoon preparedness, or rain protection, giving permission for shops in the markets selling rain protection items such as plastic sheets, rain wears, including umbrellas etc.

As per the district Collector’s order, a  number of outlets will also remain open during the prescribed period, including all facilities in the supply chain of essential goods, whether involved in wholesale or retail of such goods through local stores, large brick and mortar stores or e-commerce companies, cold storage and warehousing services.

Canteens/restaurants on the premise of the permitted establishments catering to only in-house staff/residents may remain functional, all industries/factories and related activities, all constructions and related activities, including repairs will remain open.
