Traders hope to recover from lockdown losses

MARGAO
With the monsoons expected to set in anytime now and the unauthorized vendors having done a brisk business during the lockdown period, traders in the Margao Municipal New Market hope to cash in on the curfew relaxations announced by the district Collector.

Faced with the prospect of incurring heavy losses with goods, especially rain-wear and rain protection, lying unsold in their shops during the lockdown, New Market traders now look forward for the next couple of days to dispose of their goods before the onset of rains.

President of Margao New Market Traders Association Vinod Shirodkar said the traders are all ready to open their shops from Monday as per the Collector’s order. He, however, hastened to add that the traders have been advised caution to ensure that they comply with the Covid safety norms, including social distancing in the market while conducting business.

“We have planned to deploy our own men in the market to ensure that social distancing norms are followed by everyone. These are the last few days before the onset of monsoon and we only hope that we manage to dispose of our stock and save ourselves from losses”, Vinod said.
