MARGAO
Goan vendors selling their locally grown produce in and around the Pimpalkatta area of the city marched to the Margao Municipal Council with a plea to allow them to sell coconuts, fruits and vegetables in the mornings.
A day after MMC Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik issued an order to stop all activities in and around the Pimpalkatta after 7 am every day, MMC workers cracked a whip against these Goan vendors as well, prompting them
to march to the civic body for relief.
The vendors impressed upon the Chief Officer that unlike other vendors, who do their business along the roadsides, they come to the market in the wee hours of the day and leave for home by 8 am to 8.30 am.
They pointed out that the civic body should spare them from the 7 am deadline given that they bring locally grown produce to the market for sale.
Some of the vendors sell coconuts at wholesale rate, while others sell fruits such as mesh melon and locally growing vegetables around the Pimpalkatta.
They assured the Chief Officer that they would in no way obstruct the movement of traffic nor sell their produce throughout the day, pleading that they be allowed to sell their produce till 8.30 am.
After giving the vendors a patient hearing, the Chief Officer said he would convey their sentiments to the elected council for appropriate decision, saying the civic body will consider their case on humanitarian grounds.
