Addressing mediapersons, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai said the government has politicised Shigmo which has finished the mood of this festival among the people. He claimed the dates of Shigmo festivities clashed with students’ exams.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat said the government has plunged to a new low as regards Margao Shigmotsav. Explaining the background of the issue, Kamat said Tourism Department summoned a meet directing the Municipalites to hold a Special Meet and take a decision regarding organising Shigmo festivities. Accordingly, Kamat claimed a Committee with MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Angle Prabhudesai as ex-officio Chairperson and Vasant Shirodkar as Chairman of the Organising Committee were chosen to conduct Shigmo festivities in Margao. “Thereafter, the next meeting was held by some MLAs who decided that the government will decide in this matter. The matter moved to High Court and when the arguments were in progress, the government came out with a notification and appointed a three member Committee. Meanwhile, the HC did not grant the interim stay but will give its judgement in June after full-fledged hearing which will be binding on all Shigmotsav Samitis. Henceforth, Shigmo celebrations will be government controlled,” he informed.
