Margao to celebrate Carnival on ‘Goenchi Lok Porompora’

The Margao Carnival committee under the chairmanship of Margao Municipal Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has decided to celebrate this year’s carnival on a theme centred on “Goenchi Lok Porompora”.

As the float parade in Margao is scheduled on February 27 along the SGPDA-Ravindra Bhavan route, the committee has decided to rope in the Indonesian float, which is likely to come to Goa for the Carnival festivities, to participate in the Margao parade. 

The committee has decided to invite Arjuna Awardee Brahmanand Sankhwalkar as the chief guest for the parade.

The Margao Carnival Committee comprises MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes as the Chairman, municipal engineer Manoj Arsekar as secretary and assistant engineer Vishant Naik as treasurer.

Briefing the media after a meeting with stakeholders on how to go about organizing the forthcoming Carnival festivities, Chief Officer Agnelo said Goa has rich cultural traditions with 

folklore representing 50 major folk forms, besides rich linguistic and sociolinguistic heritage with a wealth of idioms, proverbs, rich history of maritime trade and commerce and cosmopolitan lifestyle, ancient eco-theological, nature worship and eco-feminist tradition, unique socio-cultural and economic institution of Gaunkari - the Comunidades. 

“We have a blend of architectural traditions and a living museum of masterpieces of Indian Baroque and Christian art, great traditions of ethnomusicology and Indian classical music, great traditions of classical western and devotional music, a land of culinary art with a unique blend of the eastern and western food ethos, a pioneer in Cashew feni, wine, vinegar production and bread making. The traditions of Goa are very rich and envy of the rest of the country and the world because of peaceful and hospitable nature of the people”, he added.
