The two-decade-old Margao flyover over the railway tracks in the city will undergo major repair and asphalting work, including the replacement of the damaged expansion joints.
Traffic on the flyover has been restricted to a single lane from Margao to Navelim side. The flyover will be thrown open back for traffic on March 31.
The PWD, National Highway, which is executing work on the flyover along with two other bridges at Mashem and Ordfond, at a cost of Rs 5.99 crore, has roped in an agency from Maharastra to execute the work on the flyover.
An official told The Goan that the work included the removal of the top layer of the concrete surface with asphalt. The work also includes the replacement of the worn-out rubber expansion joints.
The important flyover, which was thrown open for traffic around two decades ago before the commissioning of the Konkan railway, had been craving for attention over the years. Steel rods protruding out of the surface had been posing risks to motorists using the flyover for want of maintenance. In fact, the PWD, NH had a couple of years ago mulled removal of the top concrete surface and laying a coat of asphalt to ensure there’s no waterlogging on the flyover.
“We have set March 31 as the deadline for the agency to complete the work, which includes painting”, an official added.
