Will the over-century old Margao Municipal building at least get a fresh coat of paint, leave alone a makeover, as the heritage building has been craving for attention over the years?
An important heritage landmark in the commercial capital, the Margao Municipal building appears a neglected lot. The paint on the outer walls of the imposing building has faded, giving the structure a bad look. And, for want of repairs, water seepage into the building has been the order of the day during the monsoon.
Margao Municipal Council’s plan to give the building a new look with a fresh coat of paint came a cropper after the tender floated by the civic body landed before the Lokayukta. Since then, the MMC had been trying to get the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) to give the building a new look.
“Since GSUDA has carried out the beautification and renovation of the historic Lohia Maidan in the first phase, we only hope the agency will take up the work of beautification of the Margao Municipal building in phase-II. If not, the government should intervene and provide a grant for the Margao Municipal Council to restore the Municipal building to its past glory,” remarked a City Father.
