Margao’s Covid spike @ 438 worrying

MARGAO
Sunday saw yet another spike of Covid, with the cases crossing the 400-figure mark for the first time in the second wave of coronavirus.

Resultantly, the number of asymptomatic patients admitted in the ESI hospital, Margao, which is now notified as Covid care centre, has touched 30 on Sunday evening.

While the number of active cases in Margao stood at 386 on Saturday, the figure jumped to 438 on Sunday, a spike of 52 cases in the last 24 hours.

Health officials pointed out that the cases, which include both locals and travellers, were detected in the jurisdiction of Margao Urban Health Centre. The South Goa district hospital runs a 24-hour Covid testing laboratory, with sources indicating that the lab conducts around 300-350 tests on an average per day.

“The number of cases in the city has doubled within a week’s time. If the number of cases reported in the city last Sunday were pegged 206, it has touched a whopping figure of 438 on Sunday, indicating the cases are rising at a fast pace in the commercial capital,” officials said.

While the health authorities have decided to augment the bed capacity in the South Goa district hospital to 350 from the existing 150, sources said the hospital needs to put in place the logistics required for the proper care of patients.

Meanwhile, ESI hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Vishwajit Faldesai informed that the number of asymptomatic patients admitted to the hospital has touched 30 on Sunday evening. He said the hospital is expected to receive a couple of more patients later in the evening following a spike in cases on Sunday.
