Unseasonal heavy showers lashed parts of Bicholim, Sanquelim and Sanguem on Sunday evening bringing much-needed respite from the heat.
The heavy spell that lasted for around half an hour, however, did not cause any damage to crops and houses in the area.
Reports said that parts of Sattari, Curchorem, Honda and Quepem were also drenched in the wet spell.
Bicholim and Sanquelim had been witnessing severe heat conditions for the last one month and the heavy rains were a welcome relief.
Caught unawares by the sudden showers, the Bicholim Municipal Council has decided to take up pre-monsoons work on priority basis in order to avoid water logging in the city.
“The rainfall is uncertain and we need to be prepared for monsoon”, Chairperson of BMC, Kundan Falari said.
In Sanguem, the heavy showers were accompanied by thunder and lightning.
People were caught unawares and were seen running helter-skelter to prevent rainwater from entering their houses as many, particularly in remote villages, were yet to undertake pre-monsoon works of their houses having tile roofs.
Holy Communion celebrations at Uguem village were also affected as pandals put outside the houses for family get-togethers were drenched.
This is the second time the taluka has witnessed heavy rains since February this year.
The Indian Meteorological Department-Goa in its forecast on Sunday said, “at 5.30 pm, thundershower clouds were present over talukas of Sattari and Bicholim. Thundershower clouds are very likely to affect talukas in South Goa also in the coming hours. Clouds are moving generally in the westward direction.”
The ongoing climatic conditions are in keeping with the IMD observation of a trough-like feature forming in the lower levels of atmosphere over Goa from April 8.
