In an unusual incident, a woman with her two children and her mother-in-law protested outside the Canacona police station on Sunday after claiming that her husband had deserted her and had also accused him of eloping with another woman.
The woman along with her two young children and her mother-in-law went to the Canacona police station and sat outside the station, demanding action against her husband and a social worker for threatening her with dire consequences.
“After filing a police complaint against my husband for deserting me and our children, I have been visiting the police station for the last three months. The police have done nothing so far and say my complaint is a civil matter,” the aggrieved woman told reporters she would remain at the police station till justice is meted out in the matter.
“In the meantime, I came to know through Facebook that my husband had allegedly married another woman. That woman also posted some photos and videos claiming she had married my husband. How can their marriage be solemnised without divorcing me?”
Claiming that she, her two minor children and her mother-in-law have been suffering a lot, the woman said whenever her husband would call to speak to their children, the other woman would grab the phone, claiming she is his wife and is a well-known social activist and human rights activist.
“She claims to have contacts everywhere and begins to abuse all of us. Some days back, she started threatening us that she and my husband would come and kill us,” said the woman.
“It’s been eight days now that police have not taken any action on my complaint against her for threatening us. I am fed up visiting the police station and I cannot understand why the police are not taking action against my husband or that woman.”
The aggrieved woman said her husband is a seaman and is down in Goa since June 2020.
“In December, he left home saying he has some work in Panaji and returned after some days for the New Year. He left again and after some days, someone pointed out that a female human rights activist had posted photos claiming that she had married my husband,” the woman added.
Social activist demands action in matter
CANACONA: Another social activist, Tara Kerkar, visited the Canacona police station and sympathised with the woman.
“How can this so-called activist be involved in human rights if she has reportedly entered into a wedlock with a married man, thereby destroying another family? I strongly support the victim and she should get justice,” said Kerkar.
“We demand police action against the husband for bigamy and against the other woman for threatening the victim,” said Kerkar.
