MARGAO
The feast of the Holy Spirit was celebrated with religious fervour, pomp and traditional gaiety at the Holy Spirit Church, Margao, on Sunday. This year’s feast celebrations coincided with the completion of 453 years of existence of the church.
Delhi Archbishop Anil Couto led the faithful at the Eucharistic celebration as he was the main celebrant of the concelebrated feast Mass. Episcopal Vicar South Fr Lucio Dias, who delivered the homily, said the Holy Spirit guides people to show mercy to fellow human beings to be weapons of mercy, to give forgiveness to the enemies and bless those who speak ill of them. “If we do all these, it will only show that the Holy Spirit is living in us,” Fr Lucio said.
The traditional procession was taken out in the church compound after the Mass.
Assistant Parish Priest Fr Domnic Rodrigues later told the media that the parishioners of Holy Spirit Church are celebrating the feast of the Holy Spirit with religious fervour after the nine days of novenas. “When the Holy Spirit comes down, it gives us joy. It strengthens, gives us blessings and helps each one of us to share love, peace and forgive others,” Fr Domnic said.
The entire Old Market area of the city wore a festive look. Popularly known as the Purumetachem fest, thousands of people thronged the Old Market to buy provisions for the monsoon.
The market tinto played host to dry fish, while the old market circle displayed traditional sweets.
