Mario Gallery serves legal notice to Goa govt, G20 event organiser

PANAJI

The management of Mario Gallery has issued a legal notice to the Goa government and the event management agency for the G20 summit in Goa for allegedly using the late artist’s artwork without obtaining its permission.

In a press statement issued on Friday, Gerard D’Cunha, the Curator of Mario Gallery, having its office in Porvorim, stated the legal notice is served on Sean Sean AdEvent - agency for the G20 summit “ with copies to the Chief Secretary and the Nodal Officer.

“The notice is with respect to the installation of Mario Miranda’s famous caricature drawings in the form of life-sized figurines placed at Old Goa and Dona Paula for the G20 summit,” it said.

The celebrated late cartoonist’s office claims that eight figurines at Old Goa, another eight figurines in two clusters at Goa University, four figurines at NIO Circle and many more have been on display illegally.

The legal notice has given Sean AdEvent seven days to recall and hand over all the figurines of Mario Miranda’s artwork currently stationed at various locations. The legal notice states that if Sean Sean AdEvent does not comply within the time given, Mario Gallery will initiate appropriate legal proceedings.

The family members of the renowned cartoonist had earlier this week threatened to issue legal notice to the government and the local G20 organizers for the gross breach.

“The family of late Miranda set up Mario Gallery before he passed away in the year 2011 which looks after his legacy in various ways like publishing books, organising exhibitions, selling original paintings, authenticating pictures, giving permissions for usage, taking legal action against violators and others. The late Miranda’s artwork used during the G20 event is without any permission from the Gallery,” the Gallery had said.

Miranda, hailing from Loutolim was awarded Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 2012.
