A pall of gloom descended on the village of Chandor after receiving the news that local youth, John Dias, was shot dead in Houston, Texas, on Sunday.
Aged around 25 years, the youngster was shot dead in a store where he was working when an assailant pumped in a bullet into him from close range.
The video footage of the incident, which went viral, has sent shockwaves after the assailant in a black hood and a black face mask shot at John at the counter. The accused later could be seen making good his escape from the store. John later succumbed to his injuries. The news of John’s death was communicated to his mother back home early Monday morning by the parents of a local boy, who is staying with the deceased at Houston.
A stream of visitors called on the mother to pay their condolences.
Former president of Guirdolm Sports Club, Agostinho Antao said John was a good goalkeeper in his younger days, having kept the goal for the two clubs of Guirdolim and Chandor. “John was very obedient and disciplined when he was playing for the Guirdolim Sports Club. He had played for the Club U-14 in his young days”, Agostinho said.
He added: “We have information that John was staying with two other youth from Chandor in the US. After the incident, one of the boys conveyed the sad incident to his parents back home, who in turn communicated the news to John’s mother at around 7 am this morning”.
Chandor Sarpanch Edward D’Silva said it was very sad to hear the news of the death of the local youth. “John and his mother were staying in the village in a rented premises for the last many years. It is indeed shocking and sad that he has been killed in a shooting incident in the US,” he added.
