A simulated mass casualty and public transport disruption drill was conducted on Wednesday evening to test the civil defence preparedness as part of the nationwide exercise 'Operation Abhyaas'.

Officials and personnel of various agencies participated in the mock drill as they tested the efficacy of handling casualties in times of emergencies.

Deputy Collector, Margao Ganesh Barve told the media that around 40 casualties were reported during the mock drill, out of which the two severely injured were shifted to the South Goa District Hospital, while those who sustained minor injuries were treated at the local centre.

He further said the fire personnel, along with the tenders, also participated in an exercise to put out the fire.

South Goa District Collectorate officials said the comprehensive multi-agency mock exercise titled “Operation Abhyaas” has been conducted in the district in pursuance of the Civil Defence Act, 1968 and the Civil Defence Rules, 1968 and as part of the nationwide civil defence preparedness initiative under the directive of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Collector & District Magistrate, South Egna Cleetus oversaw the exercise, involving the coordinated participation of key response agencies and stakeholders, including the Goa Police, Fire & Emergency Services, Directorate of Health Services, Airport Authority of India, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Konkan Railway Corporation, civil defence volunteers, home guards, District Disaster Management Authority (South Goa), and other supporting departments.

This simulation aims to strengthen district-level emergency readiness and inter-agency coordination during civil emergencies involving critical infrastructure.
