Says it will work from its other houses to reach out to the poor
PANAJI
Ruling out its return to the Assistencia Goa premises in Panaji, the Missionaries of Charity (MoC) has stated that it would reach out to the poor in Panaji from its other houses in the State.
In a statement issued from Kolkata on Monday, MoC Superior General Sr Mary Joseph MC stated that the MoC on April 26 concluded the process of closing their house in Panaji “by officially handing back, with gratitude, the convent and Home we had been using in Panaji to Assistencia Goa, the owner of the premises.”
“We have vacated the premises, settled the ladies in different Homes, and moved our sisters to other houses. The Missionaries of Charity will continue to reach out to the poor in Panaji from our other houses in Goa.”
The MoC expressed its gratitude to the religious and civil authorities, and all friends and benefactors in Panaji for their kind support over the past years.
“May God’s abundant blessing be on Assistencia Goa as they continue in their aim of serving the poor and underprivileged of Panaji with dedication and joy,” Sr Mary Joseph added.
The MoC presently manages three institutions in Quepem, Carambolim and Cotto-de-Fatorpa in the State.
Earlier in a statement on April 21, the MoC had explained that a sharp decline in vocations had led to the closure of its home in Panaji, after having offered its services at the institution for nearly 50 years.
MoC Superior General Sr Mary Joseph MC had stated that the decision to close their house in Panaji had been taken after much prayer and discernment.
“Since 1976, it has been our privilege in Panaji to serve our brothers and sisters suffering from material want, physical infirmities and spiritual needs,” Sr M Joseph had stated.
“Now, however, we are finding it difficult to continue our service because of a sharp decline in vocations. While there are fewer younger sisters, the majority of sisters are growing in age and facing restrictions because of sickness. They are now unable to continue running homes for the elderly and disabled men and women.”
“As a congregation, therefore, we have been consolidating the available human resources by closing some houses and reinforcing others.”
