Transport Minister and Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho on Saturday requested Union Railways Minister Piyush Goel for a new railway overbridge connecting Shantinagar in New Vaddem to the NH17B road.

Goel, who was on a visit to Goa, visited the existing railway overbridge for a site inspection along with Godinho, following his arrival at Dabolim airport.

Goel also spent around 20 minutes offering prayers at Durga Mata Temple in New Vaddem after conducting a joint site inspection and reviewing the existing railway overbridge and then left for Panaji.

While Goel did not speak to the media, Godinho told reporters that he had submitted a proposal to Goel for an additional railway overbridge at New Vaddem.

“This existing bridge serves as an extremely important link for the population residing in New Vaddem and surrounding areas, especially because the airport and Mormugao port is in close vicinity.”

“The existing railway overbridge constructed long back is narrow and now with rising population and traffic, it is difficul for two-way traffic to cross the bridge.”

“To avoid congestion and inconvenience, I proposed a parallel railway overbridge and it can be used as one-way traffic for the benefit of lakhs of people using the NH17B road and people residing at New Vaddem and surrounding areas,” said Godinho.

The minister said he had requested Goel to consider the proposal in public interest on top priority.
