Nuvem constituency represented by Congress-turned-BJP MLA Wilfred D’Sa topped the list of constituencies where around 179 farmers sustained losses due to crop destruction in 2020-21.
While the Margao Zonal Agricultural Office has so far disbursed compensation for crop loss amounting to Rs 20 lakh, benefitting around 269 farmers from Saclete, Nuvem topped the list with monetary relief amounting to Rs 13 lakh being disbursed to farmers from the constituency.
Area-wise destruction of crop, Nuvem has topped the list with total crop area destroyed to the tune of around 50.77 hectares. The total area of crop damaged in the taluka is put around 79.82 hectares.
Margao ZAO Sheriff Furtado informed that while the department is in the process of processing the applications received from farmers who have sustained crop losses during Cyclone Tauktae in the month of July, the department has cleared and disbursed compensation to the tune of Rs 20 lakhs to the 269 farmers in the taluka.
Of the 269 farmers who sustained losses, more than half the number of farmers were from Nuvem constituency, around 179 farmer to be precise.
Furtado informed that the applications received from the farmers for compensation in the wake of crop loss during Cyclone Tauktae and rains in the month of July have been forwarded to the Agricultural department for sanction.
Sources informed that after the South Goa district authorities had returned the applications of the farmers for compensation saying they have to avail compensation under the Shetkari Aadhar Nidhi scheme and not under the disaster management funds, the Agricultural department is presently processing the forms for disbursement of compensation.
