A meeting convened by Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Rohit Monserrate to discuss traffic and parking issues in São Tomé and Fontainhas has sparked controversy after local ward councillors were left out.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Monserrate said he met residents, bar and restaurant owners, CCP Commissioner Clen Madeira, and senior police and traffic officials to discuss measures aimed at easing congestion while balancing the needs of residents, visitors and businesses.

He said suggestions were made to improve accessibility, parking discipline and convenience in the heritage precincts, stressing the need to preserve the character and liveability of Panaji’s historic neighbourhoods.

However, councillors Vithal Chopdekar and Jack Sukhija, who represent the affected wards, were reportedly neither invited nor informed about the meeting. Their exclusion has raised questions over the decision to discuss local issues without the participation of elected representatives.

Residents of Fontainhas and São Tomé have long complained about traffic congestion and parking shortages.
