Bombay High Court judge Ashwin D. Bhobe on Saturday made a strong appeal for society to embrace the growing practice of mediation as an effective way to resolve disputes peacefully.

Speaking as chief guest at the day-long ‘Conclave on Community Mediation’ held at DoubleTree by Hilton Goa, Bhobe described mediation as a swift and effective tool for finding solutions.

“Mediation is an end in itself, where nobody is a loser. Mediation is an evolution of law, and it is definitely a tool wherein all parties are in a win-win situation for all,” Bhobe said.

He added that while litigation may end a conflict, it rarely addresses its root cause.

“The beauty of mediation is that anyone can be a mediator as you just need to be of a peaceful nature. It is the need of the hour,” he said.

The ‘Community Mediation Conclave – Goa 2026’ brought together judges, mediators, legal professionals, academics and community leaders to discuss the growing role of community mediation in promoting peaceful dispute resolution.

The event, held under the theme ‘The Path to Conflict Resolution and Peace’, also saw the launch of the Goa chapter of the Mediators Council of India, a move aimed at strengthening community-based dispute resolution initiatives in the region.

Goa Advocate General Devidas Pangam praised the State’s traditional use of village panchayat councils to settle disputes and said Goa had the potential to emerge as a mediation hub.

The conclave was organised by Beyond Barriers – Towards Hope, the Indian Institute of Arbitration and Mediation, and the Mediators Council of India, and featured panel discussions involving legal experts from across the country.
