Merces structures in low-lying areas under scanner; officials inspect site

OLD GOA
Officials from the BDO's office along with the Merces Panchayat authorities conducted inspection of the alleged illegal structures that have come up in the low-lying areas in the village, on Thursday.
The inspection was conducted after directives were received from the deputy director of panchayats in this regard.
The exercise started in the morning and continued till the evening as several survey numbers were identified where such unauthorised structures have come up.
In one survey number, it took the officials nearly an hour to conduct the panchanama as close to 17 structures were identified.
Apart from the massive land filling that has occurred, the inspection team was taken aback at the unhygienic conditions prevalent in some of the properties and also the pathetic condition of hutments, where apparently migrant labourers are kept on rent.
When contacted, acting Merces Sarpanch Armstrong Braganza informed that the inspection is being conducted as per the directives received from the deputy director of panchayats.
EOVP Anil Dhumaskar along with his staff, Merces Panchayat Secretary Bheldas Karapurkar and panchayat staff and a team of Old Goa Police were present during the inspection.
