MHS to create additional beds for cremation of Covid bodies

MARGAO

Margao-based Mathagramastha Hindu Sabha has once again risen to the occasion to give a decent cremation for the people succumbing to Covid.

At a time when many an organisation has been hesitant to open its door to perform the last rites of Covid bodies, the MHS has expanded its boundaries to create additional beds for cremation of the dead.

In fact, come Saturday and all issues, including issues relating to space for cremation of Covid bodies and the fire wood required for the cremation, will stand resolved.

MHS President Bhai Nayak, who was responsible for opening the MHS cremation site at Pajifond at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic last year not just for Madgavkars, but for the people of Goa, said the MHS has gone in for expansion of the crematorium ground in the wake of the rising number of Covid deaths in the State.

“We had only three beds for the cremation of Covid bodies, which was found inadequate with the rising Covid deaths. Now, we have decided to create four more beds in our land adjoining the crematorium. The work has started in right earnest and we expect the work to be complete by Saturday,” he added.

Bhai added: “We had to go for the expansion of the crematorium since we started receiving phone calls as early as 6 am seeking inquiries over cremation of Covid bodies at Pajifond. The expansion of the crematorium should resolve the issue of space,” he added.

He further said the problem over the availability of fire wood has been resolved with citizens coming forward with truckload of firewood for the cremation.

“We get firewood from the government, but it does not come on time. Last year, former MLA Damu Naik had provided us two truckloads of fire wood. Newly-elected MMC Councilor Mahesh Amonkar has given one truckload of firewood,” he said, adding that a city businessman has promised 10 truckloads of firewood to meet the growing requirements.
