Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said that migrants were involved in nearly 80 to 85 percent of heinous crimes reported in the state.
"Involvement of migrants in 80 to 85 percent of crimes like murder and rape have been reported as per data available, Sawant said while making a special mention of the Margao double murder case which was cracked by the police within 12 hours.
The Chief Minister congratulated the police for solving the Margao double murder case within 12 hours. He further informed that DGP Jaspal Singh had announced a reward of Rs 25 thousand to the police team which solved the case.
He appealed for cooperation of the people in the drive going on in the state for reporting identity of migrants staying in rented premises.
"It is good that the police cracked the case within 12 hours," the CM said. Had the criminals left the state after the crime success would have eluded the police, Sawant added while appealing for reporting of suspected activity.
Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao complained of no-action from police on several occasions despite suspicious activities being reported to them.
Aldona BJP legislator Glen Ticlo demanded that legislation be framed to make owners responsible for non-submission of tenants details.
While referring to the demand of Ticlo, the Chief Minister said the government was in process of coming up with a new bill "Verification of Tenant".
"Records of tenants will have to be given to the police. Also labour contractors will have to maintain details of labourers and maintain their cards", Sawant said.
