Urges labourers to register with police
CANACONA
Sending a clear message against the exploitation of migrant labourers in Canacona, Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Arts and Culture, and Tribal Welfare Ramesh Tawadkar urged the migrant workforce to use their skills productively and contribute to the development of the taluka.
“You have come here to work hard and build a better life. Your first responsibility is to register your names properly at the local police station. Do not hand over your identity cards to anyone and avoid unnecessary trouble. The government will soon fix uniform wage rates for workers after discussions with contractors to ensure fair pay for your hard work,” Tawadkar said at a meeting with daily wage labourers at Ravindra Bhavan, Canacona. Canacona Police Inspector Harish Raut Dessai and several contractors were also present.
Hundreds of labourers from different states attended the meeting, which focused on their welfare and safety.
Tawadkar further said, “If any contractor exploits or harasses you, strict action will be taken against them. Use your skills for good work and stay away from addictions, theft, drugs, and illegal activities. Cooperate with the police and the local community to maintain peace and order.”
Inspector Dessai also spoke about safety at work, avoiding alcohol and disputes, following traffic rules, seeking police help when needed, and maintaining discipline.
Local councillor Ramakant Naik Gaonkar was also present. At the end of the meeting, several labourers shared their problems and grievances. Minister Tawadkar assured them that their issues would be looked into and resolved.
