Criticised for being superfluous to the existing hierarchy of elected representatives, Zilla Panchayat members in Goa may soon get another task on their depleted job rosters.
Goa's Panchayati Raj Minister Mauvin Godinho on Wednesday said that he was contemplating tasking ZP bodies with taking over and maintaining empty spaces, left so mandatorily by builders and real estate developers, which the Minister claimed had gone to ruin.
"I have one thing in mind. In Goa, what I have noticed is all open spaces, which are mandatory for builders to leave. Normally they are handed over to panchayats, and panchayats do not have enough funds and for reasons best known to them, the open spaces are not developed. Some trees grow there and garbage is dumped. When I say clean and green Goa, Zilla (Panchayats) hardly have any work," Godinho said.
"I propose to hand over all the open spaces to them to develop so that they do a good job. Whatever work has been given to the Zilla (Panchayats) so far, they have done a good job with limited money. Let them develop open spaces. The land has just been transferred and handed to panchayats. We are thinking in future we will transfer them to the ZP so that they will also have some work to do," he added.
