Supporters of Mormugao MLA and NRI Commissioner Milind Naik were jubilant after Naik was on Monday elevated as cabinet minister and was allotted the portfolios of urban development, social welfare and provedoria.
The entire panel of ruling councillors of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) was present for the swearing-in ceremony, as Governor Mridula Sinha administered the oath of office and secrecy to Naik and Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral.
Naik, a three-time legislator from Mormugao constituency, saw a large number of people visiting his constituency office since Monday morning to wish and congratulate him, as news broke out that he was being inducted as minister.
Supporters of Naik expressed great happiness and said his elevation as minister would mean good days for Mormugao constituency.
Speaking to reporters, former chairman of Mormugao Planning and Development Authority and present Councillor Krishna Daji Salkar said it was great news that the government had reposed faith in Milind Naik again.
“It is an extremely great moment for all of us as we now have another minister in the constituency. We will now see a lot of development works in Mormugao constituency and Mormugao taluka in general. Naik, who was a minister in the previous BJP-led government, had delivered during his tenure as power minister and taken up a lot of development works in the constituency,” said Salkar.
Another supporter said justice had finally prevailed as Naik was elevated as a minister.
“Though he won for the third term despite many former BJP ministers losing in the last assembly elections, the ministry was given to legislators who had jumped either jumped from the Congress or legislators of coalition partners.”
“Though we felt that he deserved a ministry, Naik had always remained patient and never demanded a ministerial berth. Today, we feel that justice is delivered. We are sure a lot of development works will be taken up and we will soon see a Mormugao constituency like never before. We are proud that our MLA is finally a minister in the cabinet,” said the supporter.
