BELAGAVI
Traffic on the busy Belagavi–Goa road via Chorla came to a standstill on Sunday night after two accidents at the same site between Kalmani and Amte villages.
A heavy goods lorry broke down in the middle of the road on Sunday night, creating an obstruction. The situation became worse after another heavy lorry, which was attempting to pass from the side of the road, got stuck as the road gave way, causing it to overturn.
As a result, long queues of vehicles were seen on either side, leaving passengers stranded on both sides of the road for over 12-14 hours.
Students heading to schools and colleges, as well as citizens commuting for work and business, were left stranded on both sides of the road, causing huge inconvenience since early morning.
The Khanapur police team took action and managed to get the road cleared at around 5 pm on Monday, restoring traffic movement along the route. Commuters between Belagavi and Goa, as well as villagers, have blamed authorities from Goa and Karnataka for allowing the movement of multi-axle vehicles on this route.
Apart from traffic congestion and accidents, the heavy vehicles are also damaging the newly constructed Chorla road.
