Nearly 300 contract workers at the Adani-operated port terminal began an indefinite strike on Friday, demanding job security, continuity of service and protection of employment benefits after the appointment of a new contractor.
The workers said frequent changes in contractors have created uncertainty about their future despite several years of service. Many claimed they have been working at the terminal for over 15 years and have continued their duties through multiple contractor changes.
They alleged that every new contractor introduces different policies and conditions, affecting their service continuity, benefits and job security. The workers expressed concern that their long years of service are not being recognised and feared losing their jobs or being forced to accept unfavourable terms.
They demanded that their existing service conditions be protected, employment continue without interruption and their years of service be recognised regardless of changes in the contracting agency.
The workers said they were not opposing port development or operations but were seeking fair treatment and security for employees who have contributed to the terminal’s functioning for years.
Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar visited the protest site and met the workers to understand their concerns. He later held discussions with the Adani management, urging them to resolve the issue through dialogue.
Amonkar assured the workers of his support and said employees who have served for over a decade should not suffer due to changes in contractors.
The workers said they would continue their strike until they receive assurances on job security and protection of their service benefits.
