Expressing concern over garbage spots in the port town, Vasco MLA has given the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) one month to rectify the issue.
Almeida convened a joint meeting with various officials, including the MMC chief officer, Mormugao Deputy Collector Sachin Desai, MMC staff, supervisors, engineers, garbage contractors and outgoing councillors to discuss various garbage-related issues of the council and also interacted with garbage contractors to identify difficulties faced by them.
"The 25 wards of the MMC have been distributed among two garbage contractors. The sanitary inspector said there have been issues and though MMC has different vehicles for dry and wet waste, people are not cooperating and sometimes throw garbage in the open or give mixed garbage to the contractor.”
“We request people to offer garbage after segregating at source, failing which the MMC will be forced to penalise such people,” said Almeida.
He said black spots are rising and there are now over 17 spots around the port town.
“MMC got approvals to buy new vehicles under the 14th Finance Commission but the vehicles have not been purchased. I also want to know the status of hotel garbage collection and their payment status. We are using our vehicles and our staff, but not getting payments from hotels and this is a loss of revenue.”
“I have given the MMC one month to rectify the issue and the next joint meeting will be held on December 16,” said Almeida.
