MARGAO
The spirit of Christmas rent the air in the commercial capital on Tuesday as Santa Claus made his appearance in Margao town ushering in the Christmas celebrations.
With carols played in the background and people from all walks of life descending in the heart of the city, the Communidade square, adjacent the Margao Municipal building came to life on Tuesday as Margao MLA Digambar Kamat inaugurated the 40-feet Christmas tree set up by city-based Ulhas Jewellers on Tuesday evening.
Expressing satisfaction over the Christmas tree set up by the city-based jewellers, the Margao MLA made a suggestion to draw up plans to hold Christmas festivities at the square on Christmas day this year.
Impressed by the Christmas tree and decoration put up at the venue, the Margao MLA suggested to Ulhas jewellers to make the celebration an annual event from this year onwards. “The Communidade and Margao Municipal squares can be a happening place on occasions. Let the Christmas festivities make a beginning”, he said.
Kamat thanked Ulhas Verlekar and his sons Vikram and Pritam for coming up with the novel suggestion to hold the Christmas festivities at the Communidade square. “I thank Ulhas jewellers for setting up the unique Christmas tree and decoration”, he added.
Vikram Verlekar told the media that the idea of setting up the Christmas tree came when the family had visited abroad. “When we returned home, we decided to give it a try since Christmas season is a season of joy and celebrations. Hence, with the help of the Margao Municipal Council, we decided to set up the 40 feet Christmas tree. It took us to plan and then to execute the plan to make it a reality. Lot of hard work has gone. The Christmas tree and the decorations will remain at the square till January 7”, he added.
Saying that Christmas festivities will be organised at the venue of Christmas Day on December 25, Vikram said the organization part will be discussed with the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat. “We accept the suggestion made by the Margao MLA to make it an annual event. The material used for the Christmas tree can be reused next year. We can hold the program every year”, he added.
