Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar inaugurates a newly constructed road at Avali-Khotigao.

CANACONA

Stating that the Avali hills in Khotigao-Canacona are home to many temples, Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar has pushed for the development of Avali as a pilgrimage centre to promote cultural heritage and employment opportunities through religious and eco-tourism.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a road, which had been a long-pending dream of people living in the wildlife sanctuary area at Avali-Khotigao, in the presence of Khotigao Sarpanch Vrunda Velip, former sarpanch Anandu Desai, panch members Krishna Gaonkar, Jayesh Gaonkar, and other villagers.

The road marks a major step in improving connectivity and accessibility for Avali and nearby villages. For years, residents faced numerous difficulties due to the poor condition of the road ” particularly students, senior citizens, and daily commuters who suffered greatly during the monsoon season.

With this new road now ready, the region is set to experience better transportation, increased economic activity, and growth in rural tourism and pilgrimage.

Addressing the gathering, Tawadkar said, “This road issue had remained pending for several years, and we could finally provide a solution. This is not just the construction of a road ” it represents the fulfilment of the aspirations of our people.”

“The Avali hills are home to many temples. Now that the road work is completed, our next mission is to develop these temples into a recognised pilgrimage circuit. This will not only promote cultural heritage but also create employment opportunities through religious and eco-tourism.”

The minister expressed confidence that Khotigao village would soon become a model region equipped with all essential amenities.

“We are also exploring ways to enhance tourism potential and generate local employment opportunities. Development is not merely about roads and buildings; it is about improving people’s quality of life and addressing their everyday needs. This road stands as a symbol of the people’s perseverance and marks the beginning of a new journey towards progress,” Tawadkar added.

Khotigao Sarpanch Vrunda Velip, ex-sarpanch and panch Anandu Desai, and panch Krishna Gaonkar also spoke on the occasion.
