Cortalim MLA Anton Vas is set to take control of the Cortalim Panchayat after at least five members backed by him won in the 11-member panchayat body.
In a close contest, former Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira defeated the former Dy Sarpanch Raymond De Sa by a slim margin of 3 votes and sources said there were around multiple rounds of re-counting.
Speaking to reporters, Senia Pereira said it was the victory of the people.
"People have stood by genuine candidates and ignored offers to influence voters. We will unitedly take up development of the village with the cooperation of all panchs without having any opposition panch member," said Pereira.
Manuel Silva was the only panch member in the entire Mormugao Taluka who got elected unopposed in Ward 4.
Other members who were elected were Melbono Vaz (Ward 1), Senia Pereira (Ward 2), Ruella Maria Dacruz Fernandes (Ward 3), Edociana Rodrigues (Ward 5), Francisco Fernandes (Ward 6), Orlinda Lobo (Ward 7), Angela Furtado (Ward 8), Michael De Sa (Ward 9), Ujwala Naik (Ward 10) and Divya Raikar (Ward 11).
