Securing over 1,000 votes in one ward of a panchayat is a remarkable achievement by any standard and outgoing Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai created a record of sorts by winning by a massive margin of over 600 votes. In what turned out to be a one-sided contest, Pillai polled 1065 votes and got elected with a record margin of 646 votes.
The winners in Sancoale Panchayat were Santosh Desai (Ward 1), Derrick Vales (Ward 2), Tulsidas Naik (Ward 3), Maria Azavedo Vaz (Ward 4), Maurelio Paulo Luis Carvalho (Ward 5), Nidhi Nilesh Naik (Ward 6), Rohini Devendra Toraskar (Ward 7), Valento Rodrigues (Ward 8), Jasiya Kadar (Ward 9), Anusha Govind Lamani (Ward 10) and Girish Pillai (Ward 11).
Later speaking to reporters, Pillai said he would soon form a panel for the panchayat after consultation with Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho.
"We have worked in unity and the BJP party workers have supported us and we will ensure that all 11 panch members will work unitedly for the development of the Sancoale village,” said Pillai.
“The main agenda is the new Panchayat Ghar for which we had laid a foundation stone during my previous tenure and works will begin in a few months as the plan is already readied. We also want to stress on the garbage management issue and develop most of the open spaces. We will have a joint discussion on how to move ahead and while it does not matter who becomes the Sarpanch, the main agenda will be development," said Pillai.
New face defeats six-time panch Ramakant Borker
VASCO: A newcomer Maurelio Paulo Luis Carvalho defeated the longest-serving Sancoale sarpanch and six-time panch member Ramakant Borker in Ward 5, sending shock waves in the village.
Carvalho, who defeated Borker by a margin of 57 votes, said the people have expressed their love for him.
"My victory has proved that a very small person can become a giant killer and win elections if he is well connected with the people of his ward and has the will to take up development.”
“The people have found a new option and this is a victory of my voters and I also want to give credit to my father, who was a social worker and a panch member 30 years ago," said Carvalho.
