Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has urged Agriculture Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar to take steps to control the price of onion which has been skyrocketing with each passing day.

In his letter, the Curtorim MLA urged the minister to bring the skyrocketing prices of onion and vegetables under control and make them affordable to the common man through the State

Horticulture outlets at the earliest.

“I have been receiving complaints from people of my Curtorim constituency and other parts of Goa highlighting their concern on the sudden increase in the prices of onion from Rs 30 at the beginning of September this year to Rs 100 as on date. In addition the quality of onions is poor. The onion which is the most important ingredient in the Goan kitchen is now beyond the reach of the common man. Even the prices of vegetables have increased. Tomatoes are costing Rs 40 per kg, cauliflower Rs 45 per kg, ginger Rs 80 per kg and garlic Rs 180 per kg,” he pointed out.

Reginaldo said many Goemkars who are already having difficult times for the past seven months due to loss of jobs livelihoods on account of Covid are worried that if the government does not immediately act on the hike in prices of onion, it may again touch Rs 170 per kg like last year.
