From Mungul-Madel to the entire city, coupled with the distribution of bins to the city households around half-a-decade ago, the Margao Municipal Council is grappling to put in place the collection of segregated waste from the 35,000-odd households in the commercial capital.
With previous piecemeal initiatives from the civic body coming a cropper, infrastructure-hit Margao Municipal Council is giving yet another try to the collection of segregated waste door-to-door - this time from six municipal wards as the civic body has roped in 45 contract workers and six vehicles to achieve the objective. The fresh exercise will be restricted to ward no 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, all falling in Fatorda constituency, with the municipality deploying the 45 workers supplied by Ponda-based Bapu Environmental Social Service organisation in these six wards, with each worker engaged on a daily wage of Rs 500.
While the civic body has allotted 45 workers for the job to accept segregated waste and a fleet of vehicles to transport the sorted waste to Sonsodo, questions are being raised whether citizens in the six wards have been educated by the Municipal officials and City Fathers to cooperate in the exercise, beginning from November 1.
While Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai said the 45 workers engaged for the work have a specific brief to go for segregated waste, it's still unknown whether the household owners have been educated enough in segregating the waste in their homes before handing over the segregated waste to the municipal workers. Inquiries by The Goan has revealed that sanitary section of the Margao Municipality had handed over hand bills and pamphlets to the 45 workers for distribution to the households in the six municipal wards.
While Babita has exuded confidence that people will cooperate with the latest Municipal exercise in handing over the segregated waste, there were many in the corridors of the civic body, who sounded skeptical over the latest exercise, questioning the rationale behind restricting the initiative only to the select wards. They have demanded to know the logic behind deploying 45 workers in six wards to collect
door-to-door waste, while around 100 workers are struggling to cope up with the work of collecting waste door-to-door from the remaining 19 wards.
"Instead of implementing piecemeal initiatives, the Municipality should come out with a comprehensive solution to solid waste management in the city. It's now close to a decade since the Municipality had distributed bins to the households ahead of the collection of segregated waste door-to-door. Has the Municipality carried out a survey whether the bins were ever put to use by the households," remarked an official in the know.
