MMC has allotted about 800 stalls and charged Rs 500 for garbage collection from each of these. It has diverted all its labourers to collect the Saptah fair garbage, leaving the citizens to bear stink of the mounting garbage in the city and other parts.
Speaking to The Goan, a senior citizen from New Vaddem, Dattaprasad Naik said the council has failed to collect roadside garbage and as a result there is stink all around and house flies are multiplying. “Instead of diverting all its labourers to collect garbage generated by stalls at Saptah, the council should have distributed them equally for the task,” Naik said.
Paxiao D’Souza from Khariwaddo said as the council collected Rs 500 from each stall, which sums up to about Rs 4 lakh, it should have taken labourers on daily wages to collect the Saptah fair garbage and divert MMC labourers for collection in the city and
other areas. “It’s surprising that the council is boasting of making the port town garbage free by October 2 when it cannot manage daily collection,” chided D’Souza. When contacted, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik said the labourers are busy collecting the Saptah fair garbage.
When asked why the council did not employ daily wage labourers to take care of Saptah waste, Naik refused
to comment.
