MARGAO
With the city’s garbage collection and disposal coming under the High Court lens, the Margao Municipal Council along with MLA Digambar Kamat had an interaction with the garbage vehicle drivers to streamline the operations and ensure that garbage is not left uncollected for want of the drivers.
Accompanied by Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar, Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar and Mechanical Engineer Rohit, Kamat had a meeting with the garbage truck drivers at the Municipal garage at Old market on Thursday evening.
During the interaction, the Margao MLA made the drivers to see reason that any delay in lifting garbage from any part of the city would attract penal action from the High Court.
Margao civic chief Damu Shirodkar later told the media that the civic body had for the first time invited the Margao MLA for discussions with the drivers to streamline the operations. “We had a host of issues as well as grievances to handle vis-Ã -vis garbage truck drivers. “There was no system in place and drivers going on leave for days together had in the past affected garbage transportation. The interaction has helped to put a system in place, wherein drivers will now have to informed the mechanical engineer in advance before going on leave. Henceforth, drivers will be given maximum leave of two days,” he said.
The civic chief said that all the old vehicles lying in municipal garage will be disposed off soon. Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar informed that the meeting has sought to understand the grievances of the garbage truck drivers and how to address them so that the city does not suffer due to their absence. “We have told the drivers that the High Court is monitoring the garbage collection and disposal and any lacunae will be viewed seriously,” he warned.
