Unity call to put end to pollution at Cuncolim industrial estate

Civic chief says dues amounting to Rs 2.5 crore not paid till date

Unity call to put end to pollution at Cuncolim industrial estate

MARGAO
Complimenting Cuncolim MLA and Opposition Leader Yuri Alemao for raising Cuncolim industrial pollution in the Legislative Assembly and outside, citizens led by Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Landry Mascarenhas on Thursday called for unity amongst Cuncolkars to put an end to the polluting units at the Cuncolim IDC.

The Cuncolim civic chief further said that the Cuncolim Municipality has not been paid dues amounting to Rs 2.5 crore till date.

Addressing the media, the CMC chairperson appreciated Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for sanctioning funds for the transportation of the zinc hazardous waste from the Cuncolim IDC after the issue was taken up by the Opposition leader.

Demanding shut down of the fish meal plants at the Cuncolim IDC, Mascarenhas said the fish plants have been a source of pollution for the people of Cuncolim and the neighbouring villages. “Whenever the CMC had decided to act against the polluting units, they say the civic body has no jurisdiction since the estate falls in IDC domain,” Mascarenhas said.

The CMC chairperson has warned that Cuncolkars along with MLA Yuri will march to the Cuncolim Industrial Estate in thousands to wake the government from its slumber and make the Chief Minister see reason and understand the gravity of the issue.

Councillor John Dias said the Goa State Pollution Control Board should unveil the names of the fish meal or fish processing units shut down by the Board for causing pollution. “The GSPCB has not named the units shut down. But, we know there is only one fish meal plant at the Cuncolim IDC and the rest are fish processing units,” he said, while complimenting the Opposition leader for his initiative to put an end to pollution at Cuncolim IDC.

Former Cuncolim Municipal Vice-Chairperson Shashank Desai called for united efforts to put an end to pollution at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.

Congress leader Assis Noronha reminded the Cuncolim MLA and Opposition leader Yuri Alemao had raised the pollution issue several times in the Goa Legislative Assembly. The MLA has also moved several files to tone up the road, water and power infrastructure in the constituency.
