MARGAO
Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA Digambar Kamat has said that cross voting by the BJP-backed councillors resulted in the defeat of the party candidate Damu Shirodkar for the post of Margao Municipal Chairperson.
Baffled over the result that saw him stranded less than the half-way mark, Damu Shirodkar said he has no answer how this has all happened in the election. “We will have to find out what has happened,” Damu said after the polls, even as he wished newly-elected Chairperson Ganashyam Shirodkar the best in his new innings.
The Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA, however, asserted that cross voting by the five councillors resulted in the present situation. “The strength of the BJP-backed group in the civic body increased to 16 after my entry into the party. Out of the 16 councillors, councillor Sunita Paradkar had openly aligned with our rivals. But, we fail to understand how five out of the remaining 15 councillors cross-voted against the party candidate. We will find out what has happened. The Chief Minister had a review meeting on Friday evening, wherein I have also attended,” Kamat said.
