MMC chief unveils plans to make Aquem garbage-free

MARGAO
The Aquem area of the Margao Municipal Council may turn garbage-free if plans by the civic chief Damu Shirodkar bear fruit.
The Margao Municipal Chairperson on Sunday unveiled his plans to make Aquem, comprising four municipal wards, garbage fee in the coming months.
Shirodkar has drawn up plans to start the initiative in the coming month with the help of citizens and school students from the area.
While speaking at a Vanmahotsav programme in the Aquem area of the city here on Sunday, the MMC chief said 10 students drawn from the three high schools located in Aquem will be assigned the job to report to him or the team on designated numbers if they come across garbage littered along the side of the roads.
“We will set up a mechanism with the help of private players to ensure that the vehicles reach the site in no time and clear the waste with the help of labourers,” he said.
In this contest, the MMC chief said he is in discussion with the head of a private company seeking assistance by way of Corporate Social Responsibility for the initiative.
“I have also decided to utilise the funds of the Aquem association towards the activity to ensure that Aquem remains waste free,” he said.
Shirodkar said if the pilot project achieves success, the same will be replicated in other areas of the Margao Municipal area.

stacking up waste along roadsides
MARGAO:
Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar made a fervent plea to the citizens of Margao and Fatorda to desist from cleaning their backyards and stack up the waste along the roadsides.
Referring to the recent High Powered Coordination Committee (HPCC) meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the Margao civic chief said the meeting has told the Municipal body to stop dumping dry waste at the open area near the KTC bus stand.
“In such a scenario, the MMC will have no space available to dump garbage and other waste in the event the area near the KTC bus stand is shut down,” he said.
