The gram sabha of Varca on Sunday unanimously resolved that no scrapyard should be allowed in the panchayat jurisdiction.
At the gram sabha meeting chaired by sarpanch Salesiana Fernandes, members demanded that Varca should not allow any scrapyard to set up its operations in the village in the future.
Some of the members pointed out that neither the cities nor the villages should play host to scrapyards and that a solution to the scrapyards should be worked out at the government level.
Sarpanch Salesiana Fernandes told the members that neither the village plays host to any scrapyards nor has anyone approached the panchayat to set up one in the village adding that the local body would not allow any scrapyards to come in the village.
The gram sabha also discussed the issue of frequent power outages witnessed in the village in recent days, with gram sabha members demanding that the panchayat move the government for underground power cabling.
Agitated members pointed out that Varca has been witnessing frequent power cuts in the last few days, with the power officials laying the blame on the disruption of supply from the main line.
The issue of the library also came up for discussion with sarpanch Salesiana saying the panchayat can set up a library if space is made available for the purpose.
