Margao Municipal Council on Monday got its garbage contractor to clear waste dumped on the two-wheeler-cum-footbridge connecting the city to Pedda, which had become an eyesore and a nuisance for users.
Taking cognisance of a report published in The Goan that waste dumped on the two-wheeler-cum-footbridge was causing inconvenience to users, civic officials instructed the garbage contractor to clear the footbridge and surrounding area.
By evening, the waste dumped on the footbridge had been collected and disposed of, while the surrounding area was also cleared.
While users welcomed the action initiated by the civic body, questions remain unanswered as to how the garbage contractor failed to clear the waste from the two-wheeler-cum-footbridge and other black spots on a daily basis, as mandated under the agreement with the civic body.
The agreement requires the garbage contractor to lift waste from and clean black spots on a daily basis. The Margao Municipal Council spends around Rs 6.5 crore annually on garbage contractors for door-to-door waste collection in the city.
“We welcome the action initiated by the Margao Municipal Council to clean up the area. But we hope the bridge is kept free of waste on all days,” remarked a resident of Pedda.
