MMC defaulters’ list grows long, Rs 40 cr outstanding

VASCO

That a large number of people and establishments don’t find it necessary to pay their dues to the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has become evident, with the council piling up a staggering Rs 40 crore in dues by way of house tax, trade tax, rent, signboard fees and Sopo.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday afternoon, MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes informed that although demand notices are issued to the people each year, the present outstanding dues of MMC are almost Rs 40 crore.

Providing the details, Fernandes said those who have to pay their rent dues to the council were the highest defaulters, accounting to Rs 34.57 crore alone, followed by Rs 3.23 crore (house tax), Rs 1.34 crore (trade tax), Rs 50 lakh (Sopo) and Rs 35 lakh (signboard tax).

“Many pay their taxes regularly, but we find many others who do not pay their dues. These defaulters are, however, prompt in paying telephone, water and electricity bills for fear of disconnection, but when it comes to paying house tax, trade tax and other dues to the MMC, they are not forthcoming,” said Fernandes.

“I appeal to them to come forward and clear their pending dues. If there is any dispute, they can pay under protest,” said Fernandes.

“Let them make it a habit to pay on time. I don’t want to be harsh, but I will not stop if forced to take some strict action. I have noticed there are some wilful defaulters for many years and one more opportunity is given to them because wilful neglect cannot be tolerated.” It’s my sincere request to them not to neglect their duty towards their municipality as this is their municipality, the CO added.
