Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday sent its first truck-load of plastic waste to Karnataka through the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), even as the civic body has set in motion a campaign to sensitise the residents on waste segregation at source.
MMC Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai, Chairman of the Garbage Committee Tito Cardozo, councillors Jose Fernandes and Peter Fernandes, besides engineer Deepak Desai and Sanitary Inspector Sanjay Sanguelkar descended at the Sonsodo waste treatment plant as the first truck-load of plastic waste was scheduled to leave the plant for Karnataka.
The chairperson later told the media that the municipality on Monday set in motion the process of waste segregation and baling the plastic waste as per the GSPCB directions. “This is a good beginning the MMC has made on the waste front. We are bracing up to launch a concerned awareness campaign in six municipal wards, basically explaining the residents and households the benefit of waste segregation at source," Babita said, adding 'the municipality intends to take the waste segregation at source and reduce the amount of plastic waste finding its way along roadsides in the near future."
She complimented the municipal staff, including the engineers and the sanitary officials for implementing the waste segregation proposal, while seeking cooperation from the citizens of Margao to take the project to its logical conclusion.
