Will newly-elected Margao Municipal Chairperson Pooja Naik take cognizance of the iconic municipal garden being used by persons to take a nap, while denying citizens from enjoying some moments on the garden benches?

While the Margao Municipal Council has painted the garden benches and laterite fencing to give the place a new look, after the civic body failed to spruce up the Margao Municipal square yet again, locals found that the benches are often occupied by outsiders, for sleeping and to stack their goods.

Locals had in the past complained to the Margao Municipal Council how locals have been deprived of the seating facility on the garden benches as they are most of the time found occupied by persons, many of whom even misuse the facility to consume liqour.

While the MMC had in the past engaged a security to ensure that the benches are not converted into sleeping cots, the security personnel has been conspicuous by his absence in recent times, giving a free run to these persons to occupy the benches.

“We have found that most of the people, who occupy the garden benches are outsiders and migrants, who either use them to sleep or to consume drinks. Given the situation, locals have stopped using the benches. Since the MMC has recently given the garden benches a fresh coat of pain, we hope they will instill discipline in the users,” remarked a local resident.
